In Long Beach, mosquitoes that carry the Zick virus

According to reports from the Department of Health and Human Services, Long Beach first detected mosquitoes that could be carriers of the Zick virus, dengue fever and other viruses.

Officials of the city urge residents of the district "to take the necessary precautions to prevent mosquito bites". It is also stated that active actions are being taken to control the infection.

The Zick virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti), but can also be transmitted through sexual contact and from a pregnant mother to her baby

"Our goal is to control this mosquito population," said city health officer Anissa Davis.

Aedes aegypti is a small, aggressive, black-and-white mosquito that is active in the daytime. The mosquito can lay eggs right by the chrome water on the sides of small vessels and containers, which contain water.

City officials urge residents to report unusual mosquito congestions or bites on the city's hotline at 562-570-7907.
