The state of Florida will be the first in the United States to colonize a colony of genetically modified mosquitoes, "programmed" to kill ordinary mosquitoes. 

Based on the results of this test, scientists will decide whether to distribute mutants throughout the United States, as well as in Africa, where malarial mosquitoes, like the malaria they carry, present a serious problem. Incidentally, mosquitoes are so bred that their population can be easily destroyed by a common antibiotic, tetracycline.
